Cuphead is a “run and gun” platformer game inspired by classic 1930s cartoons.

The game tells the story of two brothers who lost a life-or-death bet to the Devil and must find a way to pay this dangerous debt.

In this review, I will cover the main topics regarding the game.

What are the main characteristics of Cuphead?

Cuphead stands out for its unique visual style, hand-drawn animations, and high difficulty, requiring agility and precision in many cases.

Does the game support local or online multiplayer?

Yes, for local multiplayer, support is available on all platforms. Simply connect an additional controller and press the corresponding platform button, allowing players to play as Cuphead or Mugman in joint adventures.

Regarding online multiplayer, the game does not offer built-in online features, so players need to use external means to play online, such as Steam Remote Play Together, which allows one player to stream their game screen to up to three friends who can connect their controllers and play together.

Additionally, using co-op mode naturally increases difficulty, which can be noticeable if both players are beginners.

What is the level of difficulty?

The difficulty level is considered high, especially for players new to gaming. The game features challenging gameplay with intense stages and boss battles that require quick reflexes, precision, and memorization of attack patterns.

How long does it take to complete the game?

According to HowLongToBeat, it takes approximately 10.5 hours to complete the main campaign or 16 hours if including side missions.

In my gameplay, considering the “The Delicious Last Course” DLC and completing all bosses on Expert mode and pacifist missions (i.e., 100% of the game), it took me 31 hours to fully complete the game.

Are there additional content or expansions available?

Yes. The game has one expansion, mentioned earlier, “The Delicious Last Course.” Released in June 2022, this expansion adds a new island filled with new bosses, weapons, and unique abilities.

Furthermore, the expansion introduces Ms. Chalice, a playable character with unique abilities that bring new strategic gameplay possibilities.

She can be used both in the expansion content and in the base game stages.

What are the minimum requirements to play on PC?

The minimum requirements to run Cuphead on PC, according to the game’s Steam page, are:

Windows:

  • Operating System: Windows 7 or higher
  • Processor: Intel Core2 Duo E8400, 3.0GHz or AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+, 3.0GHz or higher
  • RAM: 3 GB RAM
  • Graphics: Geforce 9600 GT or AMD HD 3870 512MB or higher
  • DirectX: Version 11
  • Storage: 4 GB available space

For Mac OS, the requirements are slightly similar:

  • Operating System: OS X 10.11.x
  • Processor: Intel Core i5 or higher
  • Memory: 4 GB RAM
  • Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 4000 or higher (requires Metal)
  • Storage: 4 GB available space

Is the game suitable for all ages?

According to ESRB, the game is rated for players aged 10 and up.

This rating is due to the presence of fantasy violence, moderate language use, and references to alcohol and tobacco consumption in the game.

However, based on my experience, I wouldn’t recommend children aged 10 to 13 play this game, as it can be quite stressful in certain parts of the game.

Does the game support controllers or only keyboard and mouse?

Both. The game offers full controller support in addition to keyboard and mouse. You can play on PC using an Xbox, PlayStation controller, or a compatible generic controller.

Are there adjustable difficulty options?

  • Simple: Ideal for beginners or those who want a more relaxed experience.
  • Regular: The standard difficulty level, suitable for most players.
  • Expert: Unlocked after completing the game on Regular difficulty, offering additional challenges for more experienced players.

Are there future updates or patches planned?

Currently, there are no updates or patches planned for Cuphead. The base game is complete, and there are no DLCs or updates scheduled, except for bug fixes.

Does the game support ultrawide or specific resolutions?

No, there is no active support for ultrawide monitors (21:9) or resolutions beyond 16:9, though ultrawide can be enabled through unofficial modifications.

Does the game have RPG elements, like skill progression?

Weapons and Charms:

Players can acquire different weapons and charms at Porkrind’s Emporium, using coins collected during stages.

Super Arts:

By filling the Super bar, players can perform special attacks known as Super Arts, which deal significant damage to enemies.
